“When we founded Nutreco as an animal nutrition company in 1994 we chose a name to reflect our activities and concerns: nutrition, ecology and economy. These concerns are central today as we face a global challenge. Population numbers are increasing towards nine billion by 2050. Incomes are rising as economies develop. With more money, people consume more protein as meat, fish, milk and eggs — all reliant on animal nutrition. We are challenged to feed this world, including those regions where people currently are under-nourished. But we have to do so more sustainably. The carrying capacity of the world is already over exploited. Agricultural production of food is partly responsible and that includes the livestock production in which Nutreco plays a part.

We believe it is possible to increase animal production and simultaneously reduce environmental impact.

To accelerate progress towards sustainable animal-based agriculture we have set targets for our businesses and made sustainability an important objective in our research and development activities. At the same time, we participate in value-chain initiatives that coordinate our actions with those of others because they will achieve far greater impact than we can when acting alone. The pages in this section of our website and our Sustainability Report explain our approach and the targets we have set. We are committed to making progress and to reporting on that progress.”
