Nutreco scales intelligent shrimp farming ecosystem as price volatility pressures global producers

As sustained price volatility continues to challenge shrimp producers worldwide, Nutreco has significantly expanded its intelligent aquaculture ecosystem, with Eruvaka now operating across 12 countries and helping farmers incorporate smart solutions to increase productivity and reduce risk at a commercial scale.

Three years after completing full ownership, Eruvaka has evolved from a technology provider into a globally integrated platform supporting approximately 20,000 harvests annually. More than 45,000 hectares of shrimp ponds are managed and monitored through connected systems, with over 60,000 intelligent feeding devices in operation.

In 2025, close to 480,000 metric tonnes of feed flowed through Eruvaka-connected systems globally and approximately 370,000 metric tonnes of shrimp worth $1.25 billion were farmed.

Today, this represents one of the largest installed bases of intelligent feeding systems in shrimp aquaculture, reflecting adoption at commercial scale by farmers seeking greater precision and consistency.

In a market where margin pressure is forcing many farms to reassess operational models, precision feeding and real-time pond diagnostics are increasingly becoming profitability safeguards. In selected markets, farmers using Nutreco’s integrated approach have achieved biomass increases of up to 40–60%, alongside improvements in feed efficiency and operational stability, resulting in uplifts in farm profits by 20-40%.

Field studies have also demonstrated carbon footprint reductions of up to 10–30% through optimised feeding practices. By combining precision feeding with real‑time pond insights, the approach also supports more stable pond conditions and improved crop reliability, which are critical contributors to survival.

Shrimp farming has become an AI and data-driven business and there is no margin for error,” says Kunal Choudhary, CEO of Eruvaka. “Technology on its own does not solve volatility. The real impact comes from integrating intelligent feeding systems with biological expertise, farmer’s experience, feed formulation and strong local advisory support. That ecosystem enables farmers to make faster, more informed decisions in challenging market conditions.

Eruvaka’s connected ecosystem includes AI based sonic feeding technology, automatic feeders, water-quality monitoring and an overarching farm management platform to monitor and manage feeding and farm activities.

Unlike standalone digital tools, Eruvaka’s solutions are embedded within Skretting’s broader nutrition and advisory framework, connecting real-time farm data with applied research and on-the-ground expertise. This integrated model allows Nutreco to move beyond equipment deployment towards proactive farm optimisation.

For Skretting, the integration of Eruvaka demonstrates how we are evolving as a business,” says Maarten Bijl, CEO of Skretting. “By bringing together digital innovation, nutrition expertise, farmer’s experience and local advisory support, we empower farmers with better insights, create measurable impact on performance and sustainability, and help sustain resilient aquaculture systems for the long term. In doing so, we are strengthening our partnerships with farmers and building a more resilient, future-ready aquaculture industry.

Nutreco first partnered with Eruvaka in 2018 and completed full ownership in 2023, reinforcing its long-term commitment to building connected, scalable solutions across the feed-to-farm value chain. The continued expansion of Eruvaka reflects Nutreco’s strategy of integrating digital & tech/AI innovation with nutrition science and strong local advisory expertise. By combining intelligent feeding systems with deep biological knowledge and adapting solutions market by market, Nutreco is enabling a shift from reactive support towards proactive farm optimisation, strengthening both resilience and sustainability in global shrimp production.
