Nutreco's story

Imagine a baby born in 2020. Digital native, world citizen, modern human. And like all the other 7.5 billion humans on the earth today, an omnivore able to choose a varied diet, with protein an important daily part. At Nutreco, our business is built around supporting the people who produce this healthy protein.

By the time this child is 30, our planet will be supporting 10 billion people who all need high-quality protein. To feed them, the food industry will need to produce 70% more food than today – more food in the next 30 years than we have in the past 80,000 years combined.

However, the world this child is born into is changing rapidly. Demand for meat and seafood is surging, while our agriculture industry is struggling to adapt. Farmers face huge economic, sustainability and animal welfare challenges. And we are already consuming the equivalent of 1.5 planet earths of natural resources each year – and wasting one-third of the food we produce.

If we don’t revolutionise how we produce the animal proteins we need, embrace agricultural systems that reduce waste and help communities thrive, balance food costs as a portion of income and maximize the use of technology to create both traditional and alternative proteins, by the time the child born today is in her 30s, we will face a global humanitarian crisis.

We believe that there is a solution that will provide fair opportunities for farmers, protect and restore natural resources and be driven by the transparency and traceability consumers demand. It will require dramatically better planning and management and the widespread deployment of precision farming approaches, regenerative agriculture and circular nutrient management.

Due to our deep expertise in animal nutrition and farming, our long-standing dedication to innovation, the support of our parent company and the passionate commitment of our people, Nutreco and our business lines, Skretting and Trouw Nutrition, are well-positioned to be leaders in this transformation.
