Access to healthy, high-quality food is essential for building thriving communities and supporting farmers, families and future generations. At Nutreco, we're helping empower communities across Africa to secure a healthier future through innovations in nutrition and farm management.
Using music and dance to inspire healthy diets in Uganda
This commitment is at the heart of our purpose, Feeding the Future, and aligns with the good citizenship pillar of our sustainability strategy. To bring this message to life, we have embarked on an inspiring journey, based on the universal language of music and dance, through our Hendrix4U program.
In partnership with the Ghetto Kids from Uganda, a globally renowned dance group, our Middle East and Africa (MEA) team created a unique video showcasing the connection between health, nutrition and farm management – the core pillars of our livestock feed business line Trouw Nutrition. Filmed in a vibrant farm environment, the project highlights how proper nutrition is essential for both people and animals, integrating African culture and farming practices.
The collaboration with the Ghetto Kids allows us to reach beyond the agricultural sector, to inspire not just farmers but also communities and families across Africa. Through the power of dance, the video conveys a message of the deep connection between nutritious food and raising healthy bodies, smart minds and happy spirits, shaping a brighter future for us all.
The key objectives of the video were to:
- Inspire young people to prioritise health and nutrition.
- Promote animal care and best practices in livestock farming.
- Highlight farming as a cornerstone of community development, encouraging the next generation to take an active role in shaping farming's future.
About our Hendrix4U program
Nutreco’s Hendrix4U is an animal-feed manufacturing program that supports farmers at all levels, from small-scale aspirational farmers to medium and commercial-scale producers of poultry, dairy cows and pigs. The program provides tailored livestock feed solutions, quality control, farm management support and a "factory-in-a-box" to empower farmers with the knowledge, tools, and feeds they need to care for animals and sustain their livelihoods. Helping farmers increase the production of high-quality animal proteins is an important part of the food triangle necessary to feed a growing population.
In 2022, Nutreco received a $4.8 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to accelerate the implementation of localised, sustainable complete feed production for small-scale producers in sub-Saharan Africa through the Hendrix4U program. The grant is funding 20 Hendrix4U complete feed production projects in Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Cameroun, Uganda, Kenya and Madagascar. The 34 Hendrix4U projects in total, which all include a full-service package for small-scale feed production, not only improve local feed value chains, but also critically improve the profitability of over 15,000 poultry and dairy producers.
